Students at Ulster BOCES Hudson Valley Pathways Academy took on their second industry challenge. Each month, teams of students spend several days working on simulated cases for different business challenges hosted by different manufacturers. Representatives from Schatz Bearing Corporation, a ball bearing manufacturer in Poughkeepsie, presented students with a display board problem. Students then brainstormed and presented new display board plans to executives at Schatz.
This animation was created by TRI Transmission and Bearing Corp. and shows the basic elements of an Align-A-Pad bearing. This bearing is a simple tilt pad journal bearing used in a fluid drive. It is a six pad bearing designed to be pinched in a pedestal. Other bearing designs by TRI Transmission and Bearing Corp. include features like hold down ears and saddle blocks used for alignment adjustments. This bearing has holes for vibration probes and thermocouples, though the additions were not added to the animation. TRI Engineers can analyze vibration problems, design a bearing to address the problem and then manufacture a high quality, American made product. Many bearing in the field use a dovetail bore design. TRI Transmission and Bearing Corp. explains why the dovetail design leads to Babbitt wipes and bearing failures. TRI Transmission and Bearing explains vibration induced by oil whirl and how pressure dam bearings control oil whirl. One of the important issues behind understanding PV is designing around thermal expansion characteristics that each plastic material has.
I accidentally dropped the Hiwin linear guide carriage and some of the ball bearings just flew away. I decided to take it apart to service it and repack/replace it with ball bearings. The ball size for CA (standard accuracy, no preload) was about 3.16 or 3.165mm (my micrometer only reads to 0.01mm accuracy and I don't have a digital micrometer). It is very close to the 1/8th size ball bearing - 3.175mm. I'm guessing that the smaller size is for no preload and 3.175mm is for a pretty heavily preloaded carriage. It's for a cnc machine I'm building.
The propeller shaft bearings are some of the most critical components on a vessel that can affect performance. Our composite bearing portfolio, which includes: Wärtsilä Envirosafe, Wärtsilä Sternsafe and Wärtsilä Steersafe is designed to ensure smooth and continuous operation of all types of vessels, even in the most challenging environments. Learn more at http://www.noria.com The practice of over-greasing bearings not only is a waste of grease, but it can also drastically shorten bearing life. In this video, Noria’s Mike Brown reveals what you should know to avoid overgreasing so you can keep grease in your bearings and not on the plant floor. Take the next step.
